HISTORY OF EWWIC

Designated a California Point of Historical Interest

August 1, 1986

East Whittier's higher lands received its water in the early days from a pump house built by the East Whittier Land and Water Company; however, by 1905 the pump house was no longer needed and was sold to the East Whittier Woman's Improvement Club for a clubhouse.

The dining room, kitchen, and restrooms have been added to the original brick building through the years. Following the repair of the structural damage caused by the earthquake of October 1, 1987, the building is again in excellent condition.

Our East Whittier Woman's Improvement Club, formed at the turn of the last century, is believed to be the oldest women's club in the county east of Los Angeles.

In the early 1900s, our members were instrumental in the restoration of the Pio Pico Adobe. In 1908, the parents of former President Richard Nixon were married in the pump house Clubhouse. When in 1910, a nearby school was destroyed by fire and again after the earthquake of 1933, the Clubhouse was loaned as a temporary school. Even now, it is often used by a variety of community groups as well as for weddings and receptions.

We believe that our Clubhouse stands today as a home for our members and as a monument to the early history of our city. We continue to guard it with tender loving care that it may be preserved for the joy of those generations to come.
